  1. As reported by Cassandra Chew - ST Insight:
...The Workers' Party (WP), which is eyeing Nee Soon East for the next election, has been working on the ground since it first contested in the ward in 2001.
At least once a month, Dr John Yam, who chairs WP's North Area Committee, makes house visits and chats with residents at coffee shops.
Dr Yam is coy about who they might send to the front lines, but says they will campaign on national issues that they have heard on the ground.
"Today the income gap has widened alot, and it is not easy for those above 40 or 50 years old to get a job. We welcome foreigners, people who add value to our economy and society, but I think these things are happening too fast, too soon.
"Some of the policies - such as those on foreigners - are going in a direction that is not in favour of the locals, more so for the lower - and middle-income Singaporeans, many of whom are unemployed,: says Dr Yam.
Insight's informal survey yielded similar responses with many residents lamenting, if not crying foul, over the rising cost of living....
